There is a #mentalhealth epidemic amongst us. The pressures of life are already tough and the science/grad school environment can exacerbate untreated problems. It’s tragic to see young, bright lives like my fellow UCF Chemistry alum Samantha cut short. RIP 😪#SuicideAwareness
2. The sciences is a very cut throat field in academia. As a chemistry PhD student, I was responsible for 40+ hours/week of research, teaching/grading 15+ hours/week, on a < $1900/month stipend… all to eventually graduate into a field with low demand job market. Optimism was low
3. Hard sciences grad students are usually treated as underpaid laborers who are easily replaceable. Many research advisors treated their students like machines as if we weren’t human. The goal was to publish papers, get grants, etc. Academia sciences has a horrible culture.

#NaomiJudd’s death is tragic, but unfortunately suicide isn’t uncommon when someone seeks help for #mentalillness under the western, allopathic model, which uses drugs proven to cause suicidality. I’m six years off drugs & no longer suicidal & was psychotic on them for years.
I’m over seeing people post #SuicideAwareness when our culture’s first line is to prescribe mind altering, toxic drugs to people & and the longer you’re on them, the more your chance for #Alzheimers or dementia increases. Spare me the fake hashtags. Go do some real research.
People are like, “Oh how tragic!” “Oh, she had so much to be happy for!” Naomi & Ashley have been very honest that their family had TRAUMA, and in this messed up medical model the SYMPTOMS of trauma are used to diagnose people as mentally ill. These drugs do NOT help with trauma.

THREAD: Everything is connected.

And so many of our modern societal problems & issues stem from disconnection.

This thread is about both connections b/w socio-cultural issues (connecting the dots) & also about connections between people. Those 2 things are connected.

/1
What we have here is human disconnectedness caused - in part - or at least greatly contributed to - by technological (over)connectedness. Another big contributing factor, I believe, is our traditional gender norms around #masculinity.

/2
Think about the phenomenon of employer “ghosting” during an interview process when they aren’t giving a candidate the job. I’ve learned it is quite common these days to not let that person know. You just stop communicating.

#Suicide by Clinic-Referred #Transgender #Adolescents in the United Kingdom. Great piece here urging us to reflect upon & think about, if evidence based #science is still your thing. Biggs (2022) conclusion asks us to question #medical responsibility. researchgate.net/publication/35…
How do we know if we are acting responsibly when we are offering ‘information’? What information are we offering? What if that information is on risk for #selfharm & #suicide? As a part of our daily #dutyofcare part of the #safeguarding process?
What about if that information is relied upon when we obtain parental consent for intervention with #children & #adolescents? What if that information isn’t true, is inaccurate, exaggerated, inflated, distorted? #science

Today is 100 days since I was first admitted to hospital after taking a mixed overdose. I won't elaborate further.
Since then I have had 3 admissions; 2 to general wards and 1 to a #mentalhealth unit. I spent time as an informal patient and also detained under Section 3 1/21
I was under #Crisis services until last week...
Today is also the first night in 99 that I am spending alone, so to occupy myself and acknowledge the 'milestone', I thought I would reflect on 10 things that I have learnt in that time...
This comes with trigger warnings 2/21
As I will be speaking about #SelfHarm and #Suicide. I also apologise in advance for any poor grammer - I am typing this out on my phone, unable to use a key board.
These are just my own experiences/thoughts/opinions - they are not meant to be generalised. Nor are they based 3/21

DEPRESSION TIPS (a copied thread)

Shower. Not a bath, a shower. Use water as hot or cold as you like. You don’t even need to wash. Just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. Sit on the floor if you gotta.

1.
DEPRESSION TIPS

Moisturize everything. Use whatever lotion you like. Unscented? Dollar store lotion? Fancy 48 hour lotion that makes you smell like a field of wildflowers? Use whatever you want, and use it all over your entire dermis.

Put on clean, comfortable clothes.
2.
DEPRESSION TIPS (a copied thread)
Put on your favorite underwear. Cute black lacy panties? Those ridiculous boxers you bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? Put them on.

Drink cold water. Use ice. If you want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.

This is Cara's Story. **Names have been changed upon request and for protection**

Cara has gone through a lot as a child. Growing up she had difficulties in coping with traumatic experiences that she and her other family members both lived with and went through.
Ever since she was on AISH, Cara and others we have talked to all recognized that all the AISH workers that our daughter and others have had to work with have always reinforced to their clients the lifelong message that many clients were unworthy of support, care & medical care.
Cara and her sister grew up in a home that had a mother with serious mental health diagnoses as well as an alcoholic father who left when Cara was 9 and her sister was 6.

This is going to be another long thread cum rant on Depression and Suicide Please bear with me.
Depression is a disease. Not a choice, not a conscious decision and certainly not "deliberately pretending to be sad".
Depression may not have any overt signs, that can be made out physically. Only self reported symptoms, elicited in a clinical interview can establish this diagnosis of Depression. Even sadness is not a strictly universal symbol.

1/Let's talk about suicide. Now I don't know all the whys and reasons why many would rather commit suicide, but I do know this; you can be surrounded by lots of people, have a contact list long as your arm, a followers/fans list of hundreds of thousands, but yet feel lonely. Why?
2/Because even though you're not alone, you are very lonely. Locked away with your thoughts and feelings because others can't be bothered to even spend a minute listening to you without accusing you of complaining. What if you do? Sometimes that's what it seems like, but not so
/3 Maybe it's the only way you can literally say how you feel. Or at times you just want to show others a different perspective, but they feel that you either don't understand or you are crazy for even having an opinion. So you shut up and shut down and stay in your lane.

TW:
1. There are many antidepressents rigourusly tested for clinical depression.
2. Mid-severe depression may not be resolved with counselling alone.
3. If you are on antidepressents, abruptly stopping them w/o consulting can lead to severe side effects like suicidal thoughts.
4. If an antidepressant isn't working out for you, please see a specialist to recommend you another one.
5. If you have suicidal thoughts, even though you think they will not be acted upon, do not ignore them. Please speak to someone close & or a professional.

Please be sensitive about the trend and do no post misinformation on depression & suicide. A tweet with misinfo got deleted here. Posting my response to that tweet. #depression

Suicidality and Domestic Abuse

A THREAD

#domesticabuse
#coercivecontrol
#suicide
#SuicideAwareness Image
Men die more often by suicide than women, especially in high-income countries, and this is reflected in suicide prevention priorities.

Yet women attempt suicide more than men, often in context of health conditions, social difficulties, substance use disorders and domestic abuse.
Despite findings that DA contributed to over a third of women’s suicides (Walby, 2004), the relationship between domestic abuse and suicide has been insufficiently studied.

1. Attempted suicide: it's ILLEGAL to deny coverage

"Self-inflicted injuries, such as injuries resulting from attempted suicide (...) cannot be excluded, according to Insurance Department staff. "
#SuicideAwareness

cga.ct.gov/2005/rpt/2005-…
2. Unless we force health insurance companies to comply with the federal law and cover injuries resulting from suicide attempts, "suicide awareness" and "prevention" are just lip service.
3. It's also time to hold a new national consensus on suicide and self-inflicted injury: they are not necessarily the result of mental illness. The patient may be victimized by a social pathology. In any case, the victim is never the culprit and has to be covered.

Here goes our first thread. Singing goes a long way towards managing our own wellbeing. We breath together, we share words and emotions during in each song. Above all we laugh together. I recommend it. #seashanty #folksong #MentalHealthMatters
We have supported each other through some dark times. When we get together to sing, however we are feeling, the songs demand we take a break from our own heads and move into a shared space. A place where we are not alone.
If you are feeling lost or lonely please consider joining a choir, a shanty group or something that involves shared performances. I know that may be a scary prospect but trust me it could be a lifesaver. #ollysfuture #SuicideAwareness #MentalHealthMatters

1. I make no apologies for the length of this thread as 1000s have been living with the strain of #LoanCharge for years & it reflects what we've endured.I urge you to read this, especially if you are in the media. This thread contains links to facts evidencing HMRC & Gov behaviour.
2. Years, decades even, of inaction & inefficiencies by @HMRCgovuk now mean that 100k contractors face ruin with 20yrs of retrospective tax in the #LoanCharge. I found out about this over 10 years after first using a scheme.
3. Former chancellor @philiphammond sums up perfectly in a separate statement on tax of what 20yrs of inaction by @HMRCgovuk signalled to people. Also remember these schemes were never illegal. How his attitude changed to suit his own agenda in respect of #LoanCharge

I'm seeing a lot of trending about the news of Jeffrey #Epstein's death.

I am also a suicidologist.

I wanted to correct some simple misinformation.

Thread.
Tw: Suicide, as I will be communicating directly about suicide.

Tw: child abuse, because of course, this involves a man accused of heinous crimes against children

#medtwitter #meded #psychtitter #SuicideAwareness
Misinformation: supervision would have prevented his death

Suicide is not preventable via lockup or supervision. Human ingenuity beats supervision 100% of the time.

* A review of 76 inpatient suicides showed that 50% died on 1:1 or q15 checks.
