🌳 The W, Arly and Pendjari national parks, or the WAP complex, is an area of natural reserves.

Its location along multiple borders and cover by forests have made it a critical space for non-state armed groups feeding political instability in the Sahel.
globalinitiative.net/analysis/armed…
🇧🇯 There has been a sharp rise in violent attacks in the areas skirting the WAP complex in #Benin since late 2021.

🔴 The areas have become important for the region’s two main armed groups - Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (#JNIM) and Islamic State Sahel Province (#ISSP).
🚨 In the WAP complex, the principal aim of #JNIM in engaging with #illiciteconomies is to further their governance agenda.

🏞️ The park serves as a relatively safe route for small bands of #smugglers to transport fuel and consumer goods across borders

Breaking: The return #AFCON 2024 qualifier between the @AmavubiStars and #Benin’s Cheetahs, scheduled for Monday 27th March, hangs in the balance, over a venue dispute.
@RChipenda, @CAF_Online’s Development Director, told @FERWAFA that as a result of inadequate facilities at the venue chosen in Rwanda for the return leg, the Amavubi will have to play their return leg game in Cotonou on Monday.
But rather than wait in Cotonou to play the return leg, as @CAF_Online instructed, the @AmavubiStars returned to Kigali, after the 1-1 draw in the first game played.

#ISIS has released an infographic detailing its operations during 2022. The group claimed 2058 attack across 22 countries, with #Iraq receiving the lion’s share of the attacks (484 attacks). As a number of us have consistently underscored, ISIS sees Iraq as its center of gravity. Image
#ISIS launched 25 suicide attacks and 579 IED/VBIED during 2025, destroyed over 700 military vehicles and over 150 thermal cameras, and burned and destroyed over 2,300 homes and churches.
#Syria and #Nigeria came in second and third place respectively, and #Afghanistan in 4th place. Again, this rating is all based on number of attacks and not casualties.

On #FreshlyPressed981 with @SopeMartins and @monsieurceee this morning, we'll be asking how the NNPC came to the conclusion that petrol will sell for ₦462/litre without the subsidy.

@Smooth981FM in 15 minutes...
The NNPC is just involved in unnecessary fear-mongering.

Our neighbours, who are poorer, pay a lot more than we do for petrol. What I see in all this is people committed to maintaining their cushy subsidy scam going on.
Consider the attached chart, published in February.

As of February, based on the exchange rate, we were paying 40 cents per litre of petrol. In #Benin it was 95 cents, in #Niger it was 97 cents, in #Chad it was 89 cents, and in #Cameroun, it was $1.09. Image

#WestAfrica: THREAD - "Militarized Border Security Will Not Stop the Spread of Extremism into Coastal States."
My latest with @lmcsanders and Jordon Moss for @PolicyCenterNS where we provide some suggestions to avoid/limit the spread to #Benin #Togo #IvoryCoast and #Ghana 1/
#WestAfrica: Border strategies must enable trade, communication, and travel. Increasing the burden
of legitimate behaviors will make communities more vulnerable, alienate essential allies, and
lead people to see border officers as the enemy. 2/
#WestAfrica: Border security must serve & engage border communities and their leaders. Those who
live in border zones understand local dynamics better than external forces. They have critical information of what is changing, and have the most to lose from extremist influence. 3/

HISTORY OF IKWERRE PEOPLE
The majority of the Ikwerre settlements have their roots traceable from the old Benin Empire.” Iwhnurọhna people descended from the ancient Bini Kingdom.
The name of the grand ancestor is Akalaka.
#Ikwerre #Benin
Their relations in Rivers State are Ekpeye and Ogba people.

The reigning Oba of Benin when Akalaka, the ancestor of Ihruọha (later called Iwhnurọhna) fled was Oba Ewuare (Ogwaro).

Akalaka, a member of the Benin royal family, fled in the 13th century on allegation of plotting
assassination of the Oba.
He died in 1462.
Iwhnurọhna his third son settled east of the Sombrero River by 1538 AD, as detailed below.
Chief N.M.T. Solomon (2004), a native of Ikodu Ubie in Ekpeyeland, in his narrative draws heavily from the now authenticated written historical

UGI'ODODUA. (UGIE ODODUA)

In old Benin, ugi’ododua was celebrated in the month of the Ẹdo lunar year, which corresponds to mid-March and early April of the Gregorian calendar.

The ceremony was initially instituted by Ọmọ N’Ọba Ẹweka I in memory of his grandfather Ekaladerhan or Izoduwa. In the 16th century, Ọmọ N’Ọba Ẹsigie, added some rituals, probably Christian fasting rites, to the ceremony, then, in the 18th century,
Ọmọ N’Ọba Eresoyen further modified the festivity by adding other rites. Furthermore, he replaced the original masks worn by the Ododua masquerades, with brass ones modelled after the masks worn by the masquerades of Ọsa N'Uzalla, the deified hero of the people of Uzalla,

I was in #America for almost the whole of last month, and one of the places I visited was El Paso in Texas. El Paso is just a wall away from Juarez in Chihuahua, #Mexico.
Both were once the same town until the Texas Revolution in 1835. Then, they went their separate ways.

The contrast between both cities today is the result of the different economic systems they run, something I talk about in @FinancialNG
Talking about this is very depressing for me because it portends a very bad future for #Nigeria. You see, like Nigeria, #Mexico is a rentier economy that runs based on the whims of a powerful elite and their criminal associates.

My Crazy Thoughts On #Lekki

When the #EndSARS protests began, no one mentioned President @MBuhari

(Thread)
But, just like aides of Governor @senatorbenayade often find a way to make others opinions seem like direct attacks on their principal, apologists and handlers of the @NGRPresident did same.
Minister Lai Mohammed succeeded in selling the narrative to the press that protests were hijacked and it was bought hook, line and sinker! What a spin! That was to justify what will happen next especially as the seemingly facelessness of the protests made negotiations difficult!

PETROL PRICING: THE MYTH, THE PUBLIC PASSION & THE FACTS.

#THREAD

#EnoughIsEnough #MrPresident #Buhari #Nigerians #IFB
Petroleum pricing is a sensitive issue in Nigeria because the various past governments got it all wrong abinitio, and this has been because of the wrongly perceived and sustained notion that 'we are a rich nation'.
In truth, no government has any business selling or retailing petrol, diesel and kerosene to its citizens.
