Long thread: Connections between #Tamil and #Portuguese
When we land in a new country, we generally ask how they say ‘Thank you’ or ‘good morning’ in their language. When we landed in Lisbon, we asked the cab driver: “How do you call a window in Portuguese?” He said, “Janela”.
The emergency windows in Portugal read as ‘Janela de Emergencia’. We continued, “How do you call table in Portuguese?” He said, “Mejai”. We didn’t stop. “How do you call a ‘key’?” “Shavi”, he helped us in the pronunciation. #tamil #Portuguese
Many roof top restaurants in Lisbon are named as “Varanda de Lisboa” (Balcony of Lisbon). Many of us who speak Tamil might have thought Jannal, Mejai, Varanda and Chavi are Tamil words or Sanskrit loan words. They are not. #தமிழ் #tamil_portuguese

We will likely never be able to establish with certainty the identity of the two Black men painted by Rembrandt. There are no documents found, linking the painting to individuals. But we can make a reasoned guess. #BlackHistoryMonth #day20 #rembrandt #identification
First there is the problem of the date. The inventory with a reference to 'two Moors in one painting' was drawn up in 1656 in what is now the @Rembrandthuis; however, the painting that hangs in the @Mauritshuis bears not only Rembrandt’s signature but also the year 1661.
Was the painting made in 1656 while Rembrandt was still living and working in Jodenbreestraat, and not signed and sold until 1661, when he had moved to the Jordaan district? The 1656 estate inventory suggests this.

1. In Nov 2016 my mom was diagnosed w/#Dementia w/#AuditoryHallucinations. As she left our house at 12AM & wandered around our neighborhood, we had to put her in a #NursingHome. She was a very limited #EnglishSpeaker & very few of her caregivers spoke #Portuguese. She wasn’t used
2. to #AmericanFood. Throughout her life she cooked the food she started cooking at 7 in #Portugal. For these & so many other reasons, I visited my mom every day. I brought dinner for both of us & spent several hrs w/her. She had gotten used to the #Routine we had established...
3. in the 3 yrs she was in the NH. In her stage of #Dementia she was still aware of time & if I didn’t show up on time, she would become upset. The voices in her mind might tell her that I wasn’t w/her bc I had been murdered by my imaginary stalker. This was just one of many.....

#Day27 [Right of visiting 12 detainees declined]

1/ While #CCP may claim that the group is not under consular protection, the right of visiting 12 detainees by consulate is an absolutely legitimate & reasonable demand, especially for a🇵🇹 #Portugese national & 2 #UK #BNO holders.
2/ But it looks that the #Portuguese Consulate office has yet to intend to visit the detained Portuguese national in person. Earlier his lawyer worried that efforts of the Portuguese authorities are 'far from satisfactory'.…
3/ Not a day goes by #HK people worrying about the situtaion of them. What makes the situation so dire is that they are completely disconnected with the outside world. God knows how does the #Chinese authorities treat them in detention. #Save12HKyouths @save12hkyouths

[#Portugese 🇵🇹 & #UK’s #BNO holders 🇬🇧 detained in #China for over 3 weeks]

1. Of the 12 #HKers detained in #China, one is reportedly #Portuguese passport holder while another two are #BNO holders. They are held w/o legal access, sparking growing concern of inhumane treatment. Image
2. It is worrying, under #nationalsecuritylaw, foreign passport holders are deprived of basic rights of access to family-appointed lawyers, which is claimingly promised in #China’s law, esp when 4 lawyers were forced to quit the case due to unusual pressure from #CCP authorities.
3. The twelve could be in China custody for a long time, without any trace. This worse scenario may unveil a new form of Chinese hostage diplomacy under growing tension between #EU & #China

-Moussa Marega, who is from #Mali and plays for #Portuguese team Porto walked off after being racially abused during his side’s 2-1 win over Vitoria de Guimarães on Sunday
3. The ENTIRE 2 TEAMS should’ve walked off with him, NOT tried to restrain him
-After scoring Porto’s second, Marega celebrated his goal by pointing to his skin.
-In response Vitoria fans aimed abuse and threw seats from the stand at him
-Fuck those racist fucks
-Shame on the referee for doing nothing but give Marega a yellow card
-Just before he walked off, Marega gave the racist fans his two middle fingers. THEY DESERVED THEM.

How long will football authorities let this racist shit continue?

🇵🇹 Portuguese illustration from #Portugal na Guerra magazine, which was published from 1917-1918 to “document the Portuguese military intervention in the greatest conflagration in the history of mankind” Image
The illustration shows soldiers of the #Portuguese Expeditionary Corps (CEP), which fought on the Western Front from 1916 until the end of the war Image
Portugal was initially neutral, though skirmishes with German forces took place in Africa.

In 1916 the Portuguese seized several merchant ships belonging to the Central Powers, which finally led to a formal declaration of war.

Happy Born Day #CesáriaÉvora! 1st time I heard her I was inside out miserably married and so lonely. I walked into a bookshop playing Sodade and it was a lifeline. 3yrs later, divorced & with someone I loved I saw her live at the Beacon Theatre in NYC 2004
I don’t speak #Portuguese so I don’t understand but I *feel* Cesária Évora’s singing. And I imagine how those of you who don’t understand #Arabic experience Om Kalthoum.
I don’t talk enough about my disastrous marriage. I was in therapy and #CesáriaÉvora’s voice and music were like a warm embrace from a place of love I had forgotten existed. When someone says “This artist saves my life,” I KNOW! And seeing her in concert was such a gift.

This is from one of my favourite songs: Siret el-Hob by Om Kalthoum. So many memories. Incandescent. Gorgeous. #Egypt
The only reason I wish I was born earlier than I was, is to have experienced more of Om Kalthoum’s music as an adult who understood its depth, to be transformed like the woman in the audience at the end of this video of her transcendent live performances
I also love Lessa Faker- here are the opening 9mins of this magnificent song that is usually 45mins or so. I say usually, bec the audience often applauds to get Om Kalthoum to repeat a verse

How Europe Raped Africa

The Berlin conference of 1884 is where European colonising nations basically carved up Africa. Historians refer to it as “the scramble for Africa”.

#Africa #Europe #WhiteSupremacy
The countries represented at the time included Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, #France, #Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, #Russia, #Spain, Sweden-Norway (unified from 1814-1905), #Turkey, and the United States of #America.
The Conference of 1884–85, also known as the Congo Conference, regulated European colonization and trade in #Africa during the New Imperialism period and coincided with Germany's sudden emergence as an imperial power.

1. So #GroupB of the #WorldCup with #Spain, #Portugal, #Morocco and #Iran is the best group ever and we already know what will happen. You just need to look back to the turn of the 16th century and events that linked all of these countries (and Russia). History will repeat.
2. In 1578, at the Battle of Ksar El Kebir in Morocco, the young king of Portugal Sebastian I, who had allied with deposed Sultan Abu Abdallah Mohammed against usurper Abd Al-Malik I, died. The next in line, Cardinal Henry, also promptly died. A succession crisis followed.
3. The end of the House of Aviz led to the Iberian Union in 1580, when Philip II of Spain marched into Portugal and defeated the troops loyal to the Prior of Crato, another claimant to the throne, in the Battle of Alcântara. Spain and Portugal were united. (Portrait by Titian)
