THREAD. A week ago I wrote this on the contribution that #migrants and #refugees make to the response to #coronavirus. Since then I have been collecting information on HOW this happens in different countries to learn for the future.

At @ODIdev we will be tracking and analysing these actions/innovations, for now here is an overview

First up the #USA where #NY state takes action allowing qualified graduates of foreign medical schools to contribute to the #Covid_19 emergency response
governor.ny.gov/news/no-20210-…
Still in the #USA, the State Department is on the lookout for medical professionals abroad willing to work in the #US. As long as they have a valid visa....mhh.....🙄

#COVID19 #migration #keyworkers #coronavirus

Prompting @gmaniatis and others to point out that there are many undocumented #migrants and asylum seekers ALREADY in the #USA who could lend a hand.

If only they were allowed

And while in the #USA: #immigrants ALREADY make an enormous contribution to #Covid_19 response.

This timely brief by @MigrationPolicy reveals that there are
6 million immigrant workers on front-lines.
✔️29% of all physicians
✔️38% of home health aides

When it comes to #migration it is often #cities that show leadership first.

The municipality of #BuenosAires allows qualified #migrant and #refugees healthcare workers including Venezuelan doctors and nurses to be hired in response

And #Venezuelan #migrant health care workers step up to the challenge in #Colombia too - focusing on much needed psychological support

Lunchtime break! Need to feed the kids!

Will be back with more from #Europe and beyond later #homeschooling #lockdown
Back from lunch and over to #Europe.

Once again #Germany leads . And again it is local government taking action: in #Saxony, the heartland of nationalist #AfD, the regional medical board advertises for #migrant and #refugees doctors to help

Meanwhile in the #UK Health Secretary @MattHancock-who recently tested positive for #COVID19-is on the lookout for foreign doctors. Sensible since
“So many overseas qualified doctors are driving Ubers because it’s so difficult to get reaccredited here' theguardian.com/world/2020/mar…
#Spain is under phenomenal strain-so the government working across key ministries is recruiting 200 foreign #doctors and #health workers. To achieve this it fast tracked resident permits and certification of skills/qualifications #covid19 #migration #covid infosalus.com/actualidad/not…
#Portugal took by far the most sensible, humane and effective action: it regularised #migrants/asylum seekers with pending applications, granting temporary residence permits and access to public services. This will also facilitate access to work 👏#COVID19 publico.pt/2020/03/28/soc…
And now, to my beloved #Italy, under so much strain and suffering. Here #migrant doctors literally came to the rescue. First came the #Cuban doctors, welcomed so warmly on their arrival in #Lombardy.

And then from our friends over the #Adriatic sea: #Albania sending 30 doctors to help #Italy.

''You are our brothers'' said Albanian PM @EdiRamaPM . Not obvious for those of us who remember how Albanian immigrants were treated in #Italy not long ago.

Final stop for today is #Australia, where 20,000 international nursing students will have restrictions on their working hours lifted by the federal government to ease pressure on the aged care sector as it reels from the #coronavirus outbreak. #migration smh.com.au/national/visa-…
Back in the #UK where the government has just announced that ALL foreign #NHS workers will have their visas automatically renewed for a year, free of charge.

Let this be the end of the #hostileenvironment @ukhomeoffice

Over to #France where #refugees with relevant qualification from countries outside the #EU can now work - under supervision - with no need for additional verification procedures

It is important to remember that #keyworkers in the front line of the #COVID19 response are not only #healthcare workers.

Many are #migrants.

In the #UK there is a shortage of agricultural workers to keep supplies of fruit and vegetables running. theguardian.com/environment/20…
Meanwhile in #Italy Ismail and his colleagues from the #Barikama migrant cooperative are out in the field and in the warehouse, packing delivery boxes of vegetables and dairy products to help feed local households. Saving lives.

Here is an idea for the future:

There is no such thing as a 'low skilled worker

There are workers who contribute to societies and economies filling skills gaps and labour demands. Evident to all in a #pandemic, but true in all circumstances. #COVID19
migrationpolicy.org/news/meeting-s…
In #Canada the College of Physicians and Surgeons of #BritishColumbia takes sensible/pragmatic actions to allow international medical graduates to play their part in the #COVIDー19 response.

Once again leadership comes from local government. #migration

‘As a doctor, I can’t stress enough how much America would benefit from the help foreign born health professionals could provide right now, regardless of their race or nationality. The #coronavirus doesn’t discriminate between national origin’ #migration google.co.uk/amp/s/thehill.…
'El Gobierno abre así las puertas a un colectivo de extranjeros que no habría tenido canales para iniciar una carrera laboral en #España'

Without #covid emergency, these workers would not be allowed to work in #Spain.

This needs to change.

#migration

It is on all of us to talk about this paradox, understand how to avoid it in the future, and take action.

Yes, the #COVID19Pandemic risks taking us backwards on #migration policies. But there is also this key opportunity to make things better #keyworkers
