THREAD: This week tragic reality on ground will overtake events. There are multiple epicenters of U.S. spread. We'll grapple with national epidemic. April will be hard. We'll get through it. Focus must be on slowing spread nationally, support healthcare system, build back in May.
We can end the national epidemic with tough measures in April, and gradually restart our activity in May and June. As we do, we must focus on getting technology and tools to make sure we can end the current spread more quickly, save lives, and keep it from ever happening again.
That means 1. Massive surveillance system and point of care tests 2. Therapeutics to prevent infection or treat those sick or exposed 3. Eventually a vaccine. Look to therapeutic antibodies as obtainable, near term promise. Technology will turn #Coronavirus into manageable threat

When we flew into @JFKairport Saturday, we got *no* screening for #coronavirus and *no* directive to self-quarantine. At #Islamabad airport, we'd gotten a temperature check and had to fill out a form about our possible exposure
We were shocked at the lack of #coronavirus screening/messaging at JFK, in New York of all places — epicenter of the U.S. #covid-19 outbreak, with now over 33,000 cases and 325 deaths. Fraying posters there warning about measles seemed almost comically out of date.

I am writing to you from Bergamo, Italy, at the heart of the coronavirus crisis. The news media in the US has not captured the severity of what is happening here. I am writing this post because each of you, today, not the government,
not the school district, not the mayor, each individual citizen has the chance, today to take actions that will deter the Italian situation from becoming your own country’s reality. The only way to stop this virus is to limit contagion.

1. Public Health and your personal health are not the same thing. The health of individuals and the health of the population are interdependent, but the strategies are different. The response to coronavirus (covid-19) in King County is a public health response.
The goal is to protect the community as a whole. Your role as an individual is to do your small part to cooperate in the larger project, for the good of the whole community. Think of it as part of your civic duty. A war effort without the war.
