#UnpopularOpinion: Some product teams like to prioritize their budgets for the solution rather than researching more into the problem. However without proper UX research, any solutions will be incomplete.

Let us talk about some ways to master "UX Research On Budget" in 3 steps!
Step 1 - List out assumptions and confirm them!

Whatever assumptions you may have about the users, list them out. Your assumptions may not be necessarily true, but it is safer to write them down on paper and get a better understanding of your assumptions of the user.
#koruux #ux
Step 2 - Make use of customer support data

Customer support teams have way more insights than you would imagine. They are the ones interacting with the users regularly and if this is documented, you have your raw user data ready to analyze.

It's time to live-tweet my own talk 💪🏼 Let's nerd out over some #userresearch #ethics 🤓

#UXRConfAnywhere The Ethical Researcher's Checklist
I start my #UXRConfAnywhere talk on #userresearch #ethics with the second biggest fuck up I've ever made as a researcher (don't ask what was Number 1):

I exposed a participant's HIV status with a calendar pop-up Google Calendar notification saying Take TDF
When we talk about #design #ethics, we rarely discuss how easily #userresearch can cause harm (if anything, research is the solution and never the problem) #UXRConfAnywhere

Hey everyone 👋
We’re doing some testing of a new body font, which is more decorative than our current one.
Initial usability/legibility went well, but wasn’t performed with Dyslexic or partially sighted participants. So we’re looking to put that right.

Recruitment for Dyslexic participants is fine, but it’s partially sighted / visually impaired that I’m looking for more insight on. Given it’s font testing, it wont be screenreader specific or JAWS, anything like that, but maybe testing blurriness, zooming etc.

Does anyone have any insight into how best to run a session with visually impaired users, but when testing something so specific like a font (so readability), rather than general usability?

Today, I was asked by an old couple to repair their mobile near my house. It was a feature phone. Took the battery out and put it back. Older people still find it difficult to do simple things in mobile as we are talking about IoT & digital India. Accessibility and Image
Internal Locus of Control is a big challenge in India. We researched in foreign countries and created things for their progressive society mental model that is available at disposal in abundance to them & then relaunched that same thing back in home with class peer pressure to
make it sell. Our progressive ideology is supported on top of hollow straws. It's never how fast can we innovate but how fast can the User adapt. Here in this case of Universal Design our user is all of the countrymen! #universaldesign #accessibility #userresearch #India #society

Love when you learn a helpful tip before an event even begins. To make Zoom calls more inclusive for #TGNC folks, you can add pronouns to your Display Name
1. Hover over your own video (or name)
2. Select the ellipsis (…)
3. Select “rename” & type pronouns after your name

Good freaking question: "Why do we continue to make people go through harmful user journeys?"

@maxmasure describes the complicated & cruel procedure to change their name. The family certificates & husband permission...shocking

@jessi_mons and @MadelenaMak advocate for #userresearch to focus less on demographics & more on what people do and who they are. Gender isn't always relevant and methods should reflect that

Columbia & UMich recently halted human subjects research b/c of public health concerns. But what are the ethical implications for #userresearch practitioners currently in the field?

(1) If you're in a highly impacted area, is it ethical for you to leave to a less impacted area?
(2) How should you handle projects centered around participatory observations?

If field respondents are expected to keep working during a crisis (e.g., service workers, healthcare providers), is it ethical for researchers to quit their participatory role and leave the fieldsite?
(3) How should you manage broken community access agreements?

If researchers make agreements with community members in exchange for fieldsite access (e.g., volunteering X hours), is it ethical to renege on that agreement and pull out before completing that service?

A thought strikes me browsing through the never ending online catalog of Apparel, that Apparel shopping is so much different than other type of shopping. Wouldn't it be great to swipe right & left like Tinder to be selective for first few minutes that will filter through the
catalog incrementally (ai) in real time. In the real world this is called window shopping!
Bombarding with XXXX numbers of items and tons of filters in the catalog is a complete disgrace to Hick's Law.

Shopping on @Flipkart after a long time. Looking for white formal shirt. I can't believe that there exist 721 brands in formal white shirt only. 4186 white shirts in total. This could be the best of use case to have a chat bot persuasive sales representative. Even filtering
through 4186 items is tiring and feels like sorting whole of MG and Brigade road in Bangalore. Phew.. 😅 #userresearch #ux #uxdesign #hickslaw

In the year 1990, India successfully transition from a close to an open economy. My earlier generation, the generation in control of finance & economy now, is master in securing foreign funding. Our nationwide trade ideology, regulations, culture, outlook and trade practices are
moulded to secure foreign funding and serving foreign countries. We fail to evaluate that over the years our standard of living have been leveled up with developed country. Further, US have declared India a developed nation. We now need indigenous production and self suffice
philosophy to improve our condition ourselves, inclusively. It means mobility in financial transaction need to be improve domestically.

"Abundance" in Design Thinking & Strategy adds a new dimension to UX. Design Thinking has Divergent & Convergent sequences. Including "#Abundance" in the scenario would help to explore a new dimension altogether. Here follow two examples.
A medical device has an alarm. The alarm
beeps in 3 levels of priority. The frequency of the number of beeps increases with the priority of the alarm. Assume it works fine & passes all usability tests with one device. Now Include "Abundance" and think of 20 devices kept in a dormitory room. The difficulty of attention
& call to action multiply in combination.
An email application to read and view the list of emails. Deleting a few 100 emails is fine. Include "Abundance" and think of Deleting a few million emails.
"Abundance" can also be included for processes. Suppose a process is designed

The feedback collected by a Customer Support Executive and UX has a notable difference. It is a checklist task for a #CustomerSupport #Executive to collect 50 feedbacks by the end of the day. #UX would be keen on collecting context and may not be compelled to complete x number of Image
calls. UX further may choose to do Observational Studies of certain scenarios to explore the Think Aloud aspect. This is significant in the field like #Healthcare.…

We have taken the Architectural concept of Cafe from French, Restaurants from the English, Disc-Disco from US and Gaming Parlor from Japan. Nobody is getting my point that in India we need to research on the Look and Feel of Gaming parlours w.r.t Indian Context. Only then
there is some hope to spread the user base among the different age group.

A framework for organizing user research data:

✨What you saw
✨What you heard
✨What it means (Emerging Insight)
✨Why it matters (Implications)

#ux #uxdesign #userresearch #DesignThinking
I've given 1 example per quadrant here for simplicity, but in reality you'd want to see patterns & trends across x amount of observations (what you saw & heard) for it to become an emerging insight & implication. ✨
Let's do another one!

What's fun is to see the tension between observed and expressed needs. That's where the kernel of a good idea starts.✨
