The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a crucial defense mechanism for the brain, regulating the exchange of molecules between the bloodstream and the brain. When the BBB is disrupted, it can have severe consequences for brain health. (1/12)
Alzheimer's disease is one example of a condition that is exacerbated by BBB disruption. When the BBB is compromised, amyloid beta-peptide deposits can accumulate, leading to #inflammation and disruption of neuronal function. (2/12)

Many people complain of feeling less "bad" but also emotionally flat. As someone who does couples therapy, I can tell you these side effects come into the session with the couple.

Many people ask - I'm eating what my grandparents ate. They were vegetarians & were (mostly) healthy & slim.
Why do I have #metabolic issues? Why should I change my food?
(I'm referring to 👵🧓 before the 1980-90s era)

Have you seen them eat from a hotel? Or buy from a shop?
They always ate locally sourced items, home cooked simple meals. Grains, Fruits & veggies didn't have the amount of #pesticides that are found today.
2. SUGARS & TREATS FOR SPECIAL OCCASSIONS
Sugary food, snacks & treats were mainly reserved for special occasions & feasting times. They were NOT an everyday item.

..many people debate the various ratios of #macronutrients like #protein, #fat, and #carbohydrates in their diet to find their optimal health. Which is great as we are #bioindividuals but most miss out on #micronutrients like #vitamins and #minerals.
The way our bodies are able to use the #macronutrients is fully dependent on how our #enzymatic pathways are influenced by various #micronutrients. One of the most important amongst is #magnesium.

Picking up where @rita_rebollo left, we spent a couple of years annotating and analyzing the rest of the rice #weevil #genome (ok, the 15% left after removing repeats)! All info presented here is on the huge Additional file 2 in @BMCBiology doi.org/10.1186/s12915… 1/n
@VargasChavezC and @gabaldonlab performed a comprehensive #phylogenomic analysis of the rice #weevil and found that this insect has a high gene expansion rate when compared to other beetles. 2/n Image
With the invaluable help of the SymT group from @INRAE_UMR_BF2I we have also reconstructed the #metabolic pathways from both #symbiotic partners. Specific losses of enzymes in the #weevil genome are limited while its #endosymbiont has suffered much more degradation. 3/n

In our recent review on #LongCovid/PASC we bring up the possibility that dysbiosis or imbalance of host #microbiome communities (in ecosytems such as the gut, lungs, or oral cavity) might contribute to at least some LongCovid symptoms: frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
2/ More specifically immune dysregulation driven by #SARS-CoV-2 might allow pathobionts (bacteria capable of both commensal + virulent acitivty) in the gut, mouth, or other body sites to collectively shift towards a state of imbalance + pro-inflammatory gene/metabolite expression
3/ Conversely, b/c composition + activity of the microbiome can influence host susceptibility and ongoing control of #viral pathogens, exisiting microbiome dysbiosis in a range of body sites may serve as a form of predisposition to LongCovid

This interesting study found that skeletal #muscle cells of #ME/CFS patients showed a decrease in oxidative phosphorylation (a metabolic pathway used by #mitochondria to generate #energy). In simple terms, that caused the cells to have a dysregulated #metabolism.
2/ Not mentioned in the paper, but important to consider, is that most well-studied #viral + bacterial #pathogens “hijack” the metabolism of the cells they infect in a manner that can result in decreased oxidative phosphorylation (or similar changes in cell energy pathways).
3/ In simples terms, these #pathogens “hijack” cell metabolism to “pull” substrates out of the human mitochondrial energy pathways...and use the substrates (lipids, fatty acids, amino acids) for their own #nutritional and replication purposes!

In this project we studied symptom heterogeneity in #depression, which is highly prevalent and may hamper ongoing research efforts in depression. @caina89, @karmelchoi, & @EikoFried have recently conducted an excellent review on the genetic side of this:

In our study, we focused on the association of #inflammation w/ specific depressive symptoms, which was previously largely described in cross-sectional studies, but also some longitudinal & polygenic risk score work.
