This is going to be one of my most important threads.

On Oct 24 2020 we analyzed the Rockefeller Foundation "Message Handbook - #Covid19 Testing & #Tracing, Sept 2020".

This thread examines the #UN [Share] Verified Guide to COVID-19 #Vaccine Communications (released Nov 18).
Before we begin, we need to understand who/what [Share] Verified is. Self-described as "the biggest team the world has ever seen" Verified is #Purpose PR firm (sister org of #Avaaz) partnered w/ #UN, #Luminate (#Omidyar) & #Ikea.
[Share] Verified "Collaborators" include #WorldBank, #Facebook, #Twitter, #TikTok, etc.…

"Verified works with the support of #Luminate, #IKEA Foundation & UN Foundation & partners all over the world."

9/gpc Intensity of exposure to Corona virus matters. Which is why all household members get sick if they don't take precautions during home quarantine of one member. It's also why bars, party rooms & public bathrooms are most dangerous.
10/gpc This means we will have to follow the five safety precautions mentioned in first tweet & repeated in 🧵, even after new cases decline(ie for 6-12 months) :

As a parent of 2 sons, I'm grateful that my younger son graduated from college last year, but I can imagine how frustrated & frightened I would feel if my boys were still in high school or younger. I GUARANTEE that I would NOT send them back for in-school learning right now.
Just take Florida, for example. FIVE minors have already DIED from #COVID19 & they were sheltering at home! Going into the "petri dish" that a school will be, is guaranteeing they'll come in contact with #Covid_19... & probably bring it home.
Some people might be willing to risk putting their kids on a school bus or in school, since MOST children who catch #COVID19 DON'T die or have serious permanent consequences, like brain or other organ damage. I couldn't. My sons are my world, my life, my heart, my soul.

1/30 In two forthcoming pieces, I examine #Japan's response to the #COVID19 #coronavirus #pandemic. I'll summarize the main non-theoretical points here (long thread alert!).
2/30 #Japan’s figures have always looked good compared to many other countries, which initially led to suspicion that the ‘real’ numbers of #COVID19 #coronavirus infections & death were being played down.
3/30 #Tokyo Metropolitan Government at least has now released full #COVID19 figures, including general death rates, seeming to put this argument to rest (but these figures are also now being challenged).…

Contact Tracing apps will likely not work the way they're conceived today.

The best attempt worldwide is proving us right: Iceland, with 40% penetration, says they're mostly useless [1//3]…
I warned of that issue weeks ago.…

For contact tracing, it’s first humans. You need ~15 people for every case, and they can manually do most of the work, like in Alaska [2//3]
These 15ppl are 5 ppl working over 3 days, (so 15 person.days) which is a very long time in contact #tracing. In other places, with tech and experience, it might be closer to ~5 person.days. And as for tech help, there’s nothing without a privacy conversation. [3/3]

Out today: Our new @TheLancet analysis of #ethics & #politics of #access to #testing #PPE & #Covid19 treatment. We must act now so to ensure that geopolitically powerful countries apply ethical standards & coordinate their procurement to access for #LMICs…
Many #African health systems lack capacity to respond if #COVID19 outbreaks get out of control. So #testing & #tracing are particularly vital.

Unfortunately, testing supplies are increasingly scarce, as #NorthAmerican & #European countries snap up everything on the market.
This mirrors failures in the #AIDS response—when testing & treatment came to #Africa years after it arrived in #US & #Europe, and long after the #pandemic had taken hold. This resulted in tens of millions of unnecessary deaths. @chidodc @DrWilfredoM @RenzoGuinto @paimadhu

While we continue to talk about #Tracing apps, we are missing out in what happens on the level of infrastructure.

I see three things:

1) Amazon and other "just-in.time" services are becoming essential infrastructure. Thus consolidating their (near monopoly) power.
2) Social media companies are consolidating their central role shaping public discourse. How? Content moderation is expanded, and, as the lock-down keeps workers at home, and the rest is focused on Covid-19 stuff, more & more is being automated, further reducing accountability.
3) Big data companies (e.g. Palantir) are moving into public sector infrastructures, providing data-analytics services. Not only do they gain access to vast amounts of data, but their logic of differential treatment (rather than universal service) will become even more dominant.

(1/5) Q: When will we go back to #Normal?

A: “There is no going back (to normal). The only way out is through.” This @TheAtlantic article summarizes key steps as the United States enters the next phases of this #pandemic.
1) Reopening – We are currently in #lockdown: the last line of defense in slowing the spread. Re-opening depends on sustainable infrastructure for #testing and health services, both of which have not been achieved to date. We are still far shy of what is needed to reopen.
2) Recalibration – Reopening will be very complicated. We should expect resurgence of infections and the need to maintain many aspects of #SocialDistancing well into the future. The remainder of 2020 and likely 2021 will require us to rethink how our society functions.

1/ I noticed that a lot of people don't know what #tracing and #tracking means.

#tracking is associated to something bad, but for some reasons #tracing seems ok. Let's go back to the definitions
2/ According to Wikipedia: "A tracking system is used for the observing of persons or objects on the move and supplying a timely ordered sequence of location data for further processing."…
3/ Even without technical skills, people understand that a system is observing, monitoring, their movements. Because we are adults with our free will, it's something we don't like.

#tracking = bad
