🇵🇱Poland, 🇸🇰Slovakia & 🇭🇺Hungary have banned #grain imports from 🇺🇦Ukraine, saying 🇪🇺EU's freeze of import tariffs to help get Ukraine grain around the world is flooding their markets and hurting their farmers.

But such unilateral trade actions cannot be taken nationally.
Despite these bans being a clear violation of EU law, the 🇪🇺Commission took a soft approach today and wouldn't even say what possible repercussions there could be.

Why? They likely don't want to become a pawn in Polish election politicking.
Poland's hard-right nationalist governing party PiS depends on the farmer and rural vote to maintain power - and there's an election later this year.

🇵🇱farmers have been protesting the Ukrainian grain influx (which has drastically lowered prices) and the Ag minister resigned.

The European Union was seeking to create a corridor to deliver Ukrainian grain by sea to the poorest countries to avoid food shortages.

However, Koch claims that little of it reached the third-world countries, with most going to Spain, as the Ukrainian authorities prioritised financial gain.

Let's explore about the business model of the #shippingindustry! Shipping is a vital part of the global economy, with goods being transported around the world by sea, air, and land.
The business model of the shipping industry is centered around the movement of goods from one location to another. Shipping companies charge fees for transporting goods from one port to another, or from one country to another. #maersk
The shipping industry has a number of different business models, depending on the type of goods being transported and the mode of transportation. For example, #container shipping is a popular business model for transporting large volumes of standardized cargo.

"The Guardian revealed this week that the #ABCD companies (Archer-Daniels-Midland, Bunge, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus) – which control 70-90% of the global #grain trade – have been making a record #bonanza as food prices have soared in the wake of the #Ukraine war."
"Campaigners are concerned that seeds and agricultural chemicals are similarly controlled by a handful of companies, with just three multinationals – Bayer-Monsanto, Dupont-Dow and Chem-China Syngenta – controlling 60% of the trade. "

Yday, #Lavrov’s confirmation in #Cairo that #Russia seeks to “help the Ukrainian people to free themselves” from their regime gained - understandably -considerable attention in Western capitals.

But it might obscure other important aspects of #Lavrov’s visit to #Egypt. A 🧵1/14
There was much hype around #Putin meeting #Iranian & #Turkish leaders last week

But #Lavrov's engaged the Arabs extensively since Feb, visiting Algeria, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi. He also hosted other Arab FMs in Moscow

Now Egypt, where he also engaged the League of Arab States 2/14
This effort to engage evenly – Iran, Turkey, Israel, Arabs – is a long-standing feature of #Russia’s MENA policy, but will become more important in light of Western #sanctions.

1/ #Russia’s reasons to agree #grain deal and deblock ports in #Ukraine:
1. Exemptions from sanctions for Putin’s cronies banks and billions $ from food exports
2. Russia’s agricultural sector is crucially dependent on import

For @CarnegieEndow
carnegieendowment.org/eurasiainsight…
2/ Russia got $11bln from grain exports in 2021, $10 in 2010. It’s very important part of state revenues. This year a record harvest is expected (130 min tonnes), and correspondingly high profits. Beneficiaries of the largest agricultural holdings are close to the #Kremlin
3/ Dmitry Patrushev, the Minister of Agriculture, is the eldest son of the secretary of the Security Council. The owners of Demetra-Holding (second largest exporter of grain) are VTB and the Marathon Group of Alexander Vinokurov, son-in-law of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov etc

There are many hurdles that need to be overcome for this to work.
2/First, the need for the grain is paramount. @unctad has made clear the vital importance of #grain, in particular #wheat, #sunflower, #corn & #barley for nations in Africa.

#Ukrainian defensive minefields around #Odessa & the #Russian #SeaBlockade are the two key challenges to establishing a secure sea lane for 🇺🇦 #grain export.
3/11
Concerning the first one, the requirements of safe shipping through minefields and effective #CoastalDefense are not incompatible, and a mine-free shipping channel to #Odessa would not seriously compromise the port's defence against #Russian #amphibious operations.

An ongoing & overdue thread on all things #BlackSea #blockade #grain and 🇺🇦maritime position.

Standard 🇷🇺 position, no need to provide safe passage as the only threat to shipping comes from 🇷🇺. Would give licence to interfere with ships and PR images.

reuters.com/world/europe/r…
2. Plans to construct temporary silos in border regions to overcome the bottlenecks caused by the different rail gauges coming in central Europe. Not a universal solution, would provide some relief to the problem.

theguardian.com/world/2022/jun…
3. Nuanced shift and suggestion by 🇹🇷around the hot issue of demining the approaches to 🇺🇦ports. Just create channels rather than complete the time consuming process.
-> not sure how viable this really is given drift mines and would require actual convoying in the areas. Image

#Ukraine #Dairy #export during the #war 🧵1/ The war has made especially big impact on dairy exports. The developed logistics supply chains to traditional markets of the post-Soviet countries were broken. It is now impossible to load goods through our seaports.
#Ukraine 2/ Generally, importers are cautious about any procurement dealt with a country at #war. As a result, despite the promising world market conditions, domestic producers have had to drastically reduce dairy #exports, while often selling products well below world prices.
3/ #Ukraine #dairy producers are losing the markets of Central Asia and the Caucasus because of the #war. Extremely problematic are exports by sea to the countries of SE+N Asia and MENA, where previously large quantities of milk powder, whey, and in some yrs, butter were shipped.

The mask drops!

Here is what #Turkey and #Russia want out of moving #grain from #Ukraine out of the Black Sea: Turkey wants a discount. Russia wants more warships and fewer mines.

Also, Russian spin is at full speed.

🧵Details below. Background note⬇️
Turkey wants a 25% discount on Ukrainian grain - Vahit Kirisci, the Turkish agriculture minister, said over the weekend.

Turkish news agency Anadolu reported that a command center in Istanbul would be established to oversee the grain operation.
Russia wants the removal of mines, particularly around the city of Odessa, which Russia has been eyeing for a naval landing for months. Ukraine is understandably reluctant.

Where have efforts to open 🇺🇦#BlackSea ports been going these past few days? Not very far because it's a complex and intractable problem. NBC had a comprehensive article on the #grain issue, worth reading:

nbcnews.com/news/world/rus… .
First mention of a 🇪🇺maritime mission.🇪🇺has run maritime ops before but nothing like this and the idea that 🇹🇷would support it is politically naive. An
🇪🇺 ops would likely depend on a settlement with 🇷🇺first as it alone wouldn't deal with all threats.

elpais.com/internacional/…
At the other end the robust approach to call 🇷🇺bluff use overwhelming NATO naval forces in some capacity, is there, and Adm Stavridis made that case too.

Leaving aside mines, 🇹🇷, Montreux, insurance logistics etc. there is an issue being overlooked..
