(1/16) Today again a more theoretical thread about #Germanic #history. It is about a theory of the origin of the first Germanic major #tribes:
the #Iron and #Amber theory!

(Many used images are from external sources, which I will gladly share if needed.) ImageImage
(2/16) But let's start from the beginning. What is a #Germanic "major #tribe" anyway?
Around the year 0, hundreds of small #tribes lived in #Germania. About 400 years later, however, they were seemingly replaced by a few large tribes, such as the #Goths, #Franks, or #Alemanni. Image
(3/16) #Researchers therefore asked themselves early on how this development had come about. It was usually assumed that #Germanic #tribes living near the #borders of the #Roman #Empire formed #raiding parties, in order to be able to undertake more successful #raids. ImageImage

Finally, the #GoldacreReview is published! (During Parliamentary Easter holidays, mid-ping-pong on the #HealthAndCareBill...)

‘What is it like to do #book research’ —a historian’s thread about the perils and joys of the archive.
1/
I am in Berlin almost exclusively because of a single document. It exists in only one place: Humboldt U rare books. It has not been digitized. Thus, I took a flight.
2/
Arrived at the library today. I’d been warned I just pre-register and have a covid test, bring vaccines. No problem. Brandy rocks up to the check in with her nihilist Matrix black suit and is ready to rock. Like many archives, you are prohibited from being in outside bags.
3/
You usually are assigned a locker. You can bring your phone and PC. Except this library required you to have your own lock. I can buy one on site! Oh. Only with coins. No card or paper cash. I go in search of cash of the coin variety. Done. Lock acquired.
Then it goes wrong.

Real-talk: #DisabilityStudies — however good the intentions of the researchers within are — is still situated in #academia and therefore is not exempt from the elitist problems that come from the "#IvoryTower". This is a five-part thread because I have Things To Say. 1/5
2/5: #DisabilityStudies / #Disabled #Researchers have a fascinating habit of dismissing Minority. "Your research doesn't mention BIPOC/LGBT/etc. disabled folx?" "Those are only a small % of the population." So are we? Disabled people are a minority. That's the point. ...Isn't it?
3/5 Likewise, #DisabilityStudies has a habit of dismissing non-academics. I'm writing an op-ed about this because the irony is fascinating/frustrating. How can you advocate for emancipatory, participatory, research while dismissing 95% of disabled people for not being 'experts'?

I spend a lot of time thinking and writing about, and advocating for #PatientPartner #compensation or #payment as part of research or other teams. I'm going to share some resources and thoughts as I've been asked lately about this 🧵.../1
For me it's best practice to offer #PatientPartners compensation (I'm going to use that term to mean the same thing as payment), and:

One thing I have seen weaponized against those who are marginalized and have experienced harm at those in positions of ‘leadership’ is the anger expressed. So very easy for #physicians, #researchers, #therapists, #counselors to point to the anger & exclaim ‘see how unbalanced 1/
this person is?’, ‘see how ill they are?’. When people are in positions where they have been harmed, where they have watched loved ones be harmed & it continues re of their voices, of their pleas for help, when those that are ‘suppose’ to help ignore the harms & gaslight 2/
#anger, to me, is a normal response. Yet many professionals use this instead to illustrate how ‘unstable’ a person or community is. NEVER do I condone threats or physical harm to anyone yet I have seen the #gaslighting of a group of or individual that has been viscerally 3

A thread on how to choose MS/Ph.D. programs if you have multiple offers (from International Students' perspective, @Omviser1 )

Disclaimer: These are my personal thoughts and do not represent any organizations that I'm associated with.

#gradschool @AcademicsSay #phdstudent
Before I jump in, some background:

When I chose Penn State over my other acceptances (UIUC, Purdue, UC Santa Barbara etc.), my friends and family were surprised to hear that I gave up a top 5 school to attend a top 15/20 in my area.

Sharing my decisioning criteria below 👇
While funding wasn't an issue to me at all, I encourage everyone to think from a ROI perspective at MS or Ph.D. levels.

I read somewhere that an acceptance without proper funding is essentially a polite decline. $$ matters.

Ph.D admission decisions are kicking in & many students are going through rounds of interviews. Here are a few tips that I’ve learnt and shared over the years.

Disclaimer: These are based on personal experiences derived from a limited sample. Take it with a grain of salt 😀.
(1/19) First of all, let’s start off by acknowledging that PhD admission is extremely competitive. You're prolly fighting for an average of 5-30 spots out of hundreds/thousands of applicants. Attempting itself is a win. Kudos !👏🏿

A thought-provoking question for everyone in the crypto community.

Why is $XRP & $XLM listed as stable coins by @WorldBank?

My idea is settlement fees and transfer times are stable (4 seconds + less than 1c fee) and for funds moving there is minimal fluctuation in 4 seconds
Compare 4 seconds to the broken correspondent banking system fees & exchange rates, which also take 5-7 days to settle. (That is not stable)

Example:
1. Send 1 million $
2. Bank has ledger with XRP / XLM
3. Sends tokens to other bank - 4 seconds
4. Receiving bank Converts 2 Cash
This ecosystem infographic of $XLM was created by the utility artist / deep researcher @XX_1133_1221_11

Their large brains make them capable of high-order cognitive behaviours, including problem-solving and tool usage.
Now, researchers have come across yet another interesting behaviour among the female octopuses: one which involves throwing objects at males attempting to mate with them!
