Important perspective below

When I was a foreign grad & trainee I bought into idea: I just needed to work 3x as hard to get 1/2 as far

At mid-career, my health gave out trying for:
“be the person you needed when you were younger”
& to protect students

this system does not work ImageImage

why can’t elite journals that define #EBM & #datadriven #healthcare
like @JAMA_current

focus on OUTCOMES
as experienced by PATIENTS

Why focus on LABELS certain physicians don’t like to hear?

In occasione del prossimo G7 in UK si riuniranno le accademie nazionali delle scienze dei paesi partecipanti (per l'Italia l'Accademia dei Lincei).
Uno degli argomenti affrontati sarà "Data for international health emergencies", illustrato qui: lincei.it/sites/default/…

Thread 1/n

This is VERY important because we already have a mistaken belief that being "a good person" or "having empathy" can erase or mitigate racial bias or disparity when study after study proves opposite. Now we're encoding bias into #algorithms and #AI that will be called #DataDriven
This is the new frontier of #systems driven #bias. Look at the demographics of who is in #technology and #BigDataAnalytics and #AI. Look at the reputation of culture of these spaces. This puts everyone at risk even if you think you "benefit" from the bias. Inaccuracy is harm.
Just look at the #COVID19 #pandemic. Who correctly predicted AND took correct actions for good outcomes?

The risk of the most vulnerable became YOUR risk

if your #sytems and #bigdata and #BigDataAnalytics fail to capture reality

your real life results will be failure.

Hello 👋 new followers. Feel free to introduce yourself.

Me: A top strength of mine is “input” Others in pics.

I tweet A LOT. I tweet long threads with links to articles, with highlighted screenshots, links to others’ tweets. I hold onto info & reference past yet “futuristic”
You have to know the past to understand patterns and see possibilities as well as navigate past barriers for the future.

If you like control or boundaries, run now as I promise you I will be 🤯 for you.

If you like creativity, expression, innovation, equity, ethics, welcome.
I am going to constantly run around the world finding interesting concepts & facts, be passionate & outspoken on justice/equity, re-use old tweets to explore new facet in new thread.

I’ll shape shift & if you try to pin me down or box me in, you will be frustrated.

So let's unpack this.

We hear a lot about "#dashboards"; we were even promised sight of one, back in March* - though we've not seen it yet.

But what are they, in reality?

*healthtech.blog.gov.uk/2020/03/28/the… ImageImage
Well, for starters, we know quite a bit about @NHSEngland's 'dashboard(s)': back in March, @MattHancock gave it powers to DEMAND confidential patient information from care providers*, for (broadly defined) "#COVID19 purposes"...

__
Under the #COPInotices:
gov.uk/government/pub…
...and we know @NHSEngland's hoovering up *at least* 70 different datasets into its #DataStore (the list at data.england.nhs.uk/covid-19/ is no longer comprehensive due to the controversial contents of some of the datasets).

As its "#PrivacyNotice" points out,

Guy's really onto something here.

'#DataDriven' contains a bunch of assumptions worth challenging, not least that #data is not #truth - it is only what you #choose or are able to #measure.

And, as well as being a way to avoid thinking - just set your #OKRs (or increasingly...
...pick your training dataset & model) and iterate until something breaks - '#DataDriven' is an insidious way to avoid #accountability: "We're just doing what the data says!"

Of course, the flipside of that is there is then no excuse NOT to be #transparent; why hide the data...
...if your contention is that it represents 'the #truth'?

Maybe Mr Cummings et al. should beware what they wish for, as - far from building #trust - systematically concealing #evidence tends to have the opposite effect.

If you think about it.

Adapting streets to a "six-foot-city" is certainly a question of geometry & space, but also how to govern that space, how to develop capacity to deliver #humanscale networks.
3 principles explored in our latest commentary bit.ly/3h6bkWZ

Principle 1 for #humanscale streets: leverage #accessibility to meaningful destinations. Entire street networks that offer a range of mobility options need to be realized. bit.ly/3h6bkWZ Image
Principle 2 for #humanscale streets: Empower #local policy networks to nurture public and political support for improved accessibility at the human scale. #citizenscience #datadriven #CommunityEngagement

Yawn.

Precision medicine, AI diagnostics & "global mining" of medical data; personalised education & AI tuition(!) when you could've had the world-class content online FOR FREE since the late 90s; 5G for digital inclusion - if you have a new smartphone... progress.substack.com/p/the-new-prog…
...and then channelling Dom et al. on "light-touch" regulation... in fact, fuck it! let's "simply start over". Plus ARPA(s) - though is "emphatically not a general model for running a country" really enough clear blue water?

The thing is, bits of this aren't wrong: certainly...
...the shift to net-zero, #sustainable energy; the need to (re)make #institutions fit for the 21st (and 22nd & 23rd...) century; also deciding, #democratically, what a good REALLY means for a '#DigitalWellbeingState'.

What really worries me, though, is the inherent glibness...

With very real world consequences:

Having seen the impact of just one 'slipped grade' (my elder son, several years back) my heart goes out to all those students receiving new like this today.
Hmm. Who at @ofqual signed off on an appeals process that operationalises the dog-eat-dog #ethics of the #HungerGames?

The problem with #data and being #datadriven and the supposed #bigdata revolution is partially about skills (people lack them) but also about who gets to "own" data inside a company --- >
What's generally happening at places out in the ether:

Step 1: Data is important and should be a competitive advantage for companies.

Step 2: Increasingly, companies have realized that.
Step 3: They’ve tried to “pivot” their business models and shift their hiring processes to be in line with this.

Step 4: Some are seeing results, but most are just gathering data and seemingly unsure what to do with it.

Data is like Drug for the Leadership Team. Once Data Driven Decision making becomes a habit, it gets difficult to take decision based on intuition. But expansion in data starved new territory needs leap of faith.

#data #popmusic #iPhone #rural #startup #coach #Analytics #funding
A classic example is Steve Ballmer justify his statement based on the #Marketing #Data collected from Motorola phone's sales and #customer response, whereas #iPhone was exploring bold new territory with no data available for a keyboard less #phone.

The UAE has historically been an 'anonymous trader' in that a lot of its trade is coming from regions not specified. See IMF dots data. Will Blockchain make it easier to hide trade flows? #datadriven data.imf.org/?sk=9D6028D4-F…
80 billion USD of UAE imports in 2017 came from 'Countries & Areas not specified' and 19 billion in exports. Where are these goods and services going, and why arent they specified?
Economies like Qatar and Singapore that are also largely re-export oriented do not have the same 'Countries & Areas not specified'. The runner up in terms of import size for UAE is China at 24 billion USD. In otherwords, UAE imports from unidentified areas is 3 times larger
